Today I'd like to share a customer case from Ethiopia.

The customer owns a fiberglass cargo boat with a draft of 3–4 meters and a deadweight capacity of 250–300 tonnes, and needs a propeller and tail shaft set. The goods will be picked up in Weifang, Shandong, and shipped to Ethiopia. The boat's propulsion configuration is: one 600HP engine with a rated speed of 1800rpm, gearbox ratio 3:1, and a planned maximum operating speed of 1400–1500rpm. The shaft taper and shaft diameter have not yet been provided.

客户有一条玻璃钢货船,吃水 3~4 米,载重 250~300 吨,需要配套一套螺旋桨和艉轴,收货地在山东潍坊,之后出运到埃塞俄比亚.这条船的动力配置是 1 台 600HP 发动机,额定转速 1800rpm,齿轮箱速比 3:1,计划使用的最大转速为 1400~1500rpm,轴锥度和轴径暂未提供.

After reviewing these parameters, we found a configuration problem: when purchasing the engine and gearbox, the customer did not clearly communicate the boat's actual usage to the design institute or a professional, which led to a mismatch between the propulsion configuration and the boat's intended purpose. An 1800rpm engine paired with a 3.0:1 ratio means the torque and thrust output are insufficient for the cargo boat to achieve better operational efficiency - it only runs fast when empty, but struggles to move when fully loaded, so the expected fuel savings are simply out of reach.

拿到这套参数后,我们判断这条船的配置存在问题：客户在购买发动机和齿轮箱时,没有把船的实际用途向设计院或专业人员表达清楚,导致动力配置与船体目标用途不匹配.1800rpm 的发动机搭配 3.0:1 速比,输出的扭矩和推力不足以让货船获得更好的经济效益 -- 空载时还能跑得快,一旦重载就跑不动了,根本达不到节省燃油的效果.

Our recommendation is to change the gearbox ratio to 3.5:1 or 4:1, so the propeller gets a more reasonable torque match and the boat's thrust improves noticeably. Combined with a propeller designed by ChenLifa, the fuel economy will be even better. Of course, to deliver a precise custom design, we still need the customer to provide key parameters such as shaft diameter and hull drawings.
